CHILLIES
Good morning, my friends. Today, I’m going to
tell you about Chillies. When you hear the word Chili, what is the first thing
that comes to your mind? Ok, is it food? Maybe people? Place or any other? Or maybe
hot? Honestly, It was hard to search what is the ‘Chili’ that our beloved teacher
means. Well, I am so sorry it’s because when I browsed the word ‘Chillies’ on
the internet, nothing came out err I mean it was not what I want. Then I tried
the word ‘Chili’ and then there were so many results about Chili. There is Chili
that means country, you know Chile, right? Why? It is because sometimes people
spell Chile as Chili. And there is Chili, a character of the Pokemon Universe.
But I believe what our beloved teacher means is Chillies that make food become
spicy. We know usually after you eat chili you will feel a sensation that is hot
sensation in your mouth that even can burn your mouth!
Now, I will ask you a question. What are Chillies?
Are they fruit or vegetable? Raise your hand if you think that Chillies are
fruit? Ok thank you. Then raise your hand if you think that Chillies are
vegetable? Ok thank you, I appreciate all of your answers. But the truth is the
truth. And the truth is Chillies are fruit.
Chillies are the spicy fruits of plants in
the genus Capsicum and sometimes spelled chilli (UK) and
chile (Southwestern US). People tend to think of fruits as being sweet
and tasty like apples, oranges, and plums. However, scientists define fruits as
coming from a flowering plant and having seeds inside to produce more of the
same item. Although Chillies are often considered to be vegetables, they are
actually fruits. Chili is the variety plant that grows well in many countries. Today there are probably 400 different chillies grown, and are one
of the most widely cultivated crops today. Botanists may dispute the
chili's original birthplace, but its amazing journey across the world and adoption
by many cultures marks the chili as a global food. The chili has been with many
cultures for so long - more than 500 years in some cases - that many might be
surprised to discover that its origin is South America.
Some of the more commonly available fresh
chillies include jalapeño, serrano, poblano, habarnero, yellow wax, birds eye,
and cayenne are now being stocked by many stores and markets. If you don’t want
to buy them in stores or market you can grow your own because they are easy to
grow.
Red chilies contain large amounts of vitamin
C and small amounts of carotene (provitamin A). Yellow and especially green
chilies (which are essentially unripe fruit) contain a considerably lower
amount of both substances. In addition, peppers are a good source of most B
vitamins, and vitamin
B6 in
particular. They are very high in potassium, magnesium, and iron. Their very high vitamin C content
can also substantially increase the uptake of non-heme iron from other
ingredients in a meal, such as beans and grains.
How to indicate the spice level of Chillies? Although it seems that larger Chillies would
have more spice to them, in reality, the smaller and thinner a chili is, the
spicier it will be. And talking about spiciness, what creates chili spiciness?
A molecule called capsaicin is the reason that Chillies are spicy. When you
bite into a chili, capsaicin affects your taste buds, nerve cells and nasal
membranes. This molecule can send information to your brain that you are hot,
causing your internal temperature to raise. Whatever, you
certainly do sweat and actually cool down in hot climates as sweat evaporates.
Your nose runs, your head clears ... you can breath! This is also why
you may experience watery eyes and a runny nose when eating spicy Chillies or
peppers. And with that extra flow of saliva, the gastric
juices also flow. The alkaloids from the capsaicin stimulate the action of
stomach and intestine improving the whole digestion process! Capsaicin
is also the ingredient used to make pepper spray so effective.
In Indonesia, chili is very important; also
it can be found anywhere. There are many foods produced from chili. Especially
in Padang, almost all kinds of foods produced from chili. Usually it may be
used in sambal and rendang. In several countries, such as Korea, Japan,
Malaysia, America, Mexico, and etc, foods which contain of chili are very
popular.
Well, I think that’s all my short report
about Chilies. I hope you’ll understand it very well. I am sorry if there are
many mistakes or grammatical errors well yeah English is not my first language.
Roses are red, violets are blue. That’s all, thank you.
